PUPPY STAKE RESULTS SEPTEMBER 2025, University of Pretoria

A very pleasant trial with a high standard. If all the puppies can be of this standard, we would not have to worry about the future of the GSP in South Africa. Six German Shorthaired Pointers competed, representing four different litters.

Great weather although bit hot later but cooling off in the dam did the trick. Bit overwhelmed by a large field of 20 puppies. The competition was stiff with 13 different litters being represented in the puppy stakes. Also good for the sport as there were 12 newcomers competing. Thanks also for all the pleasant company and thanks to the fellow judges and field stewardess who worked hard to get through the field. At our Club, the dogs and their standard comes first.

A record number of gamebirds in a typical Bushveld trial with an abundance of Francolin, guineafowl, long grass and the thick bush which makes for super hunting and close-ranging dogs. Scenting conditions vary throughout the day with the best scenting during the dusty and hot midday section. Surprising good scenting in the high winds that blew most of the weekend. According to the judges, the standard was exceptionally high. Cool camp-fire evenings and camaraderie completed the picture.

Field trialing where the standard of good dogs and sportsmanship is the norm.

There were 36 different dogs in the three stakes.

Tough stakes with bad scenting conditions. Great open spaces. It surely select those dogs with superb noses and wide ranging abilities. That is what hunting is all about. Unfortunately, discipline did not always match hunting ability. Some spectacular chases. Great competitors and good company and camaraderie. Many thanks to all the farmers who put their farms at our disposal.

Tough stakes as normal in the Highveld. Bitter cold, sometimes bad scenting conditions, thick mist with near-zero visibility till 9am, etc. Great open spaces. This trial differentiates the top HPR dogs in South Africa that can adapt to all conditions and require dogs with superb noses and wide-ranging abilities. If your dog hasn’t been there you haven’t made it.

Kaggelvuur evenings with good wine, great company, and camaraderie complete the picture.

This is the start of a new era of field trialing where the standard of good dogs and sportsmanship is the norm.
